LET IT BEGIN HERE

Those four words are immortalized on a monument in Lexington Common where Captain John Parker was the commander over 77 militiamen who faced the British troops at dawn on April 19, 1775.  These are the words he spoke to his men before the first squirmish of the Revolutionary War broke out in America.

Stand your ground. Don’t fire unless fired upon, but if they mean to have a war, let it begin here.

We have been drafted into a Revolution far bigger and more significant than the American Revolution because it is about Heaven and Hell, life and death.  It tells us in Isaiah 9, that Jesus was bringing a new government on His shoulders.  A Kingdom not of this world but of eternal significance and reality.

What does it look like for us to allow the King of Heaven to unleash a spiritual revolution in our lives and through our lives?

In Luke 4:18-19, Jesus picks up the scroll of Isaiah and reads these words, “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

This is what we are talking about when we say, “REVOLUTION.”

Will we surrender our hearts, minds, souls and strength to the King of Kings?  Will we choose to Hear His Words, Listen to His Voice and Obey His Commands?

This is where the REVOLUTION begins and may we say as Captain John Parker did all those many years ago, “LET IT BEGIN HERE!”

LEVEL One is the first of five levels of Operation: Solid Lives intense discipleship program. In LEVEL One, the students are introduced to spiritual disciplines that will cause the Word of God to change their lives forever. The Word of God fills you up through Bible reading, journaling, listening to powerful teachings, Bible memorization, while fasting from secular influences of the world which serve as daily distractions in our life. Whether you are brand new to the family of God or a mature believer, LEVEL One is a gradual step into Operation: Solid Lives, focusing on “The Love of God”.  If you desire to go deeper in your relationship with the Lord, LEVEL One will be a powerful first step.

Most people do not realize that though God’s purpose for us is an intimate relationship with Him, the process He uses is discipleship. Discipleship is—without question—God’s plan for each and every person. Consider this well-known Scripture and its emphasis on discipleship:

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you ….” Matthew 28:19–20

Notice that this command is both to you and about you. We are commanded both to become disciples and to disciple others. So, what is discipleship?

Jesus said in John 8:31–32, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

Discipleship is not merely saying a prayer to receive Jesus and then attending church occasionally. The root word for discipleship is discipline. Discipline is what separates the men from the boys, the committed believer from the casual Christian and the over-comer from the under-achiever. The primary difference between a weekend athlete and an Olympic athlete is discipline… and the result of dedicated discipline and training is “gold.”

The word “disciple” means “a disciplined follower of.” Thus, a disciple of Jesus is “a disciplined follower of Jesus,” a person who is disciplined to live, talk and be… like Jesus. Jesus said, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples…” The word “abide” means, “to continue, to stick with, to not quit or change from.” In other words, to hear what Jesus says, then obey Him for the rest your life. That takes discipline!

Sadly, many people who call themselves Christians hear the Word of God, but they do not obey it. They misunderstand the gospel which calls us to repent and follow Jesus.  James 1:22 says, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” Discipleship guards us from self-deception and facilitates God’s ultimate purpose in our lives.

In Luke 6:46–49, Jesus addresses the “hearers only” with a pointed question that cuts right to the heart of the issue… lordship! He then outlines what will be the respective results of the two responses from those who hear His Word.

Luke 6:46–49 says, “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say? Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock. But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.”

In this passage, Jesus gives us three simple steps to become solid and unshakable disciples:  Come to Jesus, Hear His sayings, and Do them.

This is not a one-time event, but a way of living. He didn’t say, “Whoever did come to Me…”, He said, “Whoever comes…”, meaning whoever “does” come to Me.

This new lifestyle of repeatedly coming to Jesus for instructions, then denying ourselves and our own conflicting desires to serve His purposes, is both foreign and difficult to all of humanity. Yet giving place to His ways and plans for our lives is the very process whereby we find our life… in Him (you’ll study the Three Steps to a Solid Life in more detail in Level Two).

Therefore, the role of OPERATION: SOLID LIVES is simply to help you come to Jesus, hear His sayings and do them—hopefully— for the rest of your life! If it were easily accomplished without help, there would have been no need for Jesus to say, “Follow Me,” to His disciples. He could have merely given them clear instructions and sent them into the world to fulfill their respective ministry callings. But interactive discipleship adds necessary ingredients to the instructions—such as encouragement and accountability—thus supplying both the strength and the incentive needed to change.

UNSTOPPABLE – a study through 1 Corinthians

After Jesus was crucified and rose from the dead, His followers were a frightened, weak group that was having no impact in their community.  Just before he ascended to the Father, Jesus told them in Acts 1:4-5Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.  For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

We see the fulfillment of this in Acts 2 when the Holy Spirit shows up and fills this small band of believers with His power and they become an UNSTOPPABLE FORCE FOR JESUS!  They go from being afraid to be known as Jesus’ disciples to preaching the Gospel boldly to thousands and seeing the Church birthed.  I like to say it like this, “When God shows up, everyone else shuts up.”

We are living in a time and place not so unlike what the Church of Corinth was dealing with in their time and we are called to be an UNSTOPPABLE FORCE FOR JESUS in this time and this place.  We are going to walk through what made this church both an force to be reckoned with in the Spirit and an terrible mess in the natural.  How are we “Grounded in His Word and Empowered by His Spirit?”

Come join us starting Sunday, September 16th as we discover together.

Life Groups are on Wednesday’s through April 18th at 7:00pm!

Feel Free to Come and Join Us!

We are meeting corporately for worship and 30 minutes of teaching by Pastors Chris and Ishtar and then breaking into gender based groups of 6-8 for discussion, encouragement and prayer.  We will be walking through Neil Anderson’s book “Victory over the Darkness” over this 8 week period.  We have copies of the book for sale at Sunday Service or at the Church Office for $10 or you can order it online here.  This will be a time that can forever change your life, so please make a commitment for 8 weeks to come on Wednesday Nights as we see how to walk in the Freedom we have in Christ and to better understand who we are in Christ.

When: Wednesday nights through April 18th from 7 – 9pm

Where: 1st Church Cambridge in the Choir Room, 11 Garden Street, Cambridge.

Life Groups are just one way in which we walk through life together, where people care for one another in love.

Life Groups are:

  • Where people matter to God and to us

  • Where people are accepted as they are

  • Where people are encouraged to become who God created them to be

  • Where people are more important than things

  • Where people are safe and trustworthy

  • Where everyone plays, there are no spectators

Life Groups are a wonderful place to grow deeper in your relationship with the Lord and with people. This is a time to reflect on Sunday’s sermon and talk about how it applies to our everyday life while fellowshiping and praying with others. We have groups that meet on different nights and places to accommodate you and the journey you are on with Jesus.

Life is too hard to walk it alone. We, at Grace Street, have found that life groups are a great way to stay connected to one another, have a place to share our lives/struggles, and grow in our relationship with God. Feel free to visit our groups and find one that suits you.
